When buying tyres it's always important to know what kind of tyre you need and the size. If you do not know what size your tyres are, here is what you need to know about getting the information. All tyres should have the information on the side wall unless they have been scrubbed off through wear and tear or from brushing up against curbs...

There are four things that will need to know when it comes to your tyres when you are pricing up to replace them and they are:

  1. Width. This is the first three numbers on the tyre. This is the width of the tread which is measured in millimetres

  2. Ratio. The second set of numbers that are for the profile of your tyre

  3. Radial. This is the letter is in relation to the cords within the tyre. In some cases, this might be a different letter depending if your tyre is a radial or a bias ply tyre.

  4. Size. This is the size that the rims are and is read using the last two numbers in the section.

So if your tyre reads 215/60R15, that means the width is 215, the ratio is 60. The R is the radial, and the 15 refers to the rims. Now that you know the size of your tyres it's time to look at the tyres you are wanting to put on your vehicle depending on what you can afford.

There are two ways that you can go when it comes to buying tyres. There are part-worn and brand new.

Part-Worn Tyres

Part-worn tyres are a good option for people on a budget, as they are cheaper than the price of new tyres. That makes them a very helpful option, however, they are used tyres and come with about 50 percent tread.

New Tyres

Buying new tyres does not need to be expensive. Most companies will have a selection of tyres and brands to suit most budgets however in some cases the more pricey tyre choices could perform better than some cheaper brand, this not always the case

Offers

Some tyre companies do run offers, so it is always a good idea to shop about, as you might just save yourself some money. For example, you might be lucky to find four for the price of three off or something off the final price if you buy a full set.

Armed with the information you are now ready to get your tyres sorted and changed. Also, note that if you are seeing uneven tread wear it's probably a sign that your tracking could be out. If this is the case ask your tyre fitter if he would take a look
