5 Features You Need When Buying Caster Wheels for Walking Frames
ShareCaster wheels are an an essential but sometimes overlooked part of a walking frame. If you are investing in a new walking frame, you may want to look carefully at the caster wheels to ensure you are getting the best wheels for your needs. Here are some ideas to keep in mind:
1. Replaceable
First and foremost, look for castor wheels that are replaceable. In most cases, the caster wheels are more subjected to wear and tear than any other part of the walking frame. If the wheels wear out, you don't want to be forced into buying a whole new frame. That is unnecessarily expensive and wasteful (as the old frame likely just goes to the landfill).
2. Swivel
Most caster wheels feature a stem that goes into the cylindrical hollow legs of the walking frame. Some wheels lock into place and only move forward, but others swivel. So that you can turn your walker easily, you want wheels that can turn.
3. Brakes
While movement is essential in some cases, it can be detrimental in other cases. For instance, if you want to leave your walking frame next to you whilst you're sitting on a bench, you need wheels that can lock. Ideally, you don't want to have to bend down to lock the wheels so make sure that the caster wheels are attached to a hand brake on the top of the walking frame.
4. Large
Size matters when it comes to caster wheels on walking frames. Small wheels work in spaces where you're only going to be dealing with smooth level flooring. For instance, if you live in a retirement centre and rarely leave, small wheels may work fine.
However, large wheels are critical for navigating sidewalk bumps or pushing your walking frame past piles of snow or debris. You also want heavy duty plastic that can withstand rough terrain.
5. Ample Weight Capacity
Also, check out the weight capacity of the caster wheels in particular or the walking frame in general. You want the wheels to be strong enough to handle your lifestyle. For instance, if you have a walker that has space for cargo, you need it to be able to hold your books, groceries or other items. Similarly, if your walking frame comes with a built-in seat, you also need to ensure that it can hold your weight plus anything else you have.
